Term One School Holidays – Trip to Terrific Taupo!
Forecast = Heavy rain and gale force winds!
Were we put off? Not even a little bit!
We loaded up, checked in with our adventure buddies and set off for terrific Taupo. Stop one was the Volcanic Activity Centre; we explored the workings of tornados, earthquakes and of course volcanoes. The earthquake simulator was fantastic and we shook and jiggled on it over and over and over. I don’t think being in a real earthquake would be fun though.
Cruising on a big Cat (short for catamaran – a big boat with two hulls) on the beautiful Lake Taupo was exciting. The water was as smooth as glass and the rock carvings spectacular, all the children and I got to have a turn driving the boat, yippee!
Drizzle became a downpour so we sought shelter in the Taupo Museum. This place is really cool, the garden that looks like the pink terraces was gorgeous, cheeky Ms Daniels tried to hide me in a cave but Tian and Victoria found me. We met an artist who made pictures using all different coloured sand, she had moved to New Zealand from Germany because it is so clean and green here.
We spent lots of time in the pools at de Bretts and splished and splashed our way down the hydro slide at least a zillion times. Ms Daniels didn’t take the camera down to the pools because the camera doesn’t have the same love of water that we do.
You never know who you might meet when you are out and about on holiday; we met Tracey-Lee, a contestant from Master Chef. She was very bubbly and friendly and keen to have her photo taken with us J.
Ding, ding, ding rang out through the park as we trundled around the track riding the little train. I was a bit nervous before we hoped on as I had never been on a train before – I snuggled safely between Tian and Victoria and felt much braver. I waved enthusiastically at everyone we passed and they waved back with smiles and laughter.
The Honey Hive was a delicious stop, I sampled lots of different types of honey and guess what – I like them all! We had hoped to watch glass being blown at Lava Glass but Mother Nature had other ideas. She smashed down loads of trees and that meant no electricity for hours and hours. Did no power mean, no fun? Definitely not - we played games, drew pictures and laughed a lot with our awesome friends.
The drive home included a detour around those pesky felled trees but I don’t remember much of it because I was snoring safely on the back seat. I can’t wait to visit Taupo again sometime soon.
